Overview
The Raspberry Creek 004 unpatented placer mining claim is known for quality gold values, ranging from flakes and fine gold. The claim is located in the northern part of the greater San Luis valley. Featuring a small creek and dry benches that contain gold values.
This claim is recommended to be worked by small wet sluicing methods and drying washing methods on the benches. The benches on the claim are dry enough to be worked with a dry washer during most of the summer months.
A benefit to being in the San Luis valley is the extended mining season. Unlike most high country mountain claims that have short mining seasons of approximately 4-5 months a year; this claim has a longer mining season of 7 months a year.
This claim sits over Raspberry Creek which is a USGS documented gold, silver, copper, and lead producing creek. The source of the placer gold originates from quartz veins located upstream of the claim.
Evidence of old mining relics are still present on the claim. This claim was worked lightly in the early 1900's; it is estimated that the area was worked by a small group of independent miners throughout the years as no past production records could be located.
Evidence of their operations consists mostly of hand dug holes in and around the creek as well as small shafts chasing the gold in quartz vein system at a deeper than surface level on the hillsides.
Depth to bedrock is variable depending upon where you are on the claim; with gold bearing pay layers located about 2 feet from surface. Some fine float gold that is highly disseminated can be found on or near the surface in addition to substantial quartz float broken off from the host rock upstream.
There is a mix of alluvial materials found on the claim ranging from well worn and water rounded cobble to sharp and angular rock.
Geology
Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks formed the Raspberry Creek area. In the lower paleozoic section a mix of steeply dipping limestones and dolomites strike nearly north-south.
Small quartz veins containing galena, chalcopyrite, and gold with silver have been identified as the source of the placer gold. Rocks along the base of the range are highly fractured due to their proximity to the Sangre De Cristo fault. Iron staining of the altered host rock and vuggy quartz with a limonite coating can be found both in-situ and within the alluvial float.
The mineralization is associated with the Sangre de Cristo fault zone and other extension faults derived from the Rio Grand Rift. Mineralized veins have been found in soley the crystalline basement rocks, and not found in the paleozoic sedimentary rocks.
